Battle Buddy Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 1, 2026 · Last updated: October 22, 2026 (Buddy question labels and shared questions now note game lookups that found nothing)
Battle Buddy is a gear and profession planner for World of Warcraft: Forever. It's made by Battle Buddy Addon LLC, a Missouri limited liability company ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information our products handle, where it goes, and the choices you have.
It covers:
- the Battle Buddy addon
- the Battle Buddy desktop app
- our AI assistant service
- our website, battlebuddy.info
The short version
- Your character data stays on your PC. The addon and the app store it locally, and the app encrypts it.
- Only when you ask the AI a question does the app send the question and the character details needed to answer it. They go through our server to our AI provider. We don't store the content of your questions or the answers.
- Our servers keep very little: your account email, your subscription status and usage counts.
- Sharing game data with the community is opt-in and anonymous, and it's never linked to your account.
- We don't sell your data, show ads or share your data with Blizzard. We also don't allow our AI provider to train on it.
1. The addon
The addon runs inside World of Warcraft. Like all WoW addons, it can't connect to the internet. It saves data only to files on your own computer, which WoW calls SavedVariables.
The addon records:
- your characters' gear, professions, inventory summary, currencies and quests
- game facts you encounter, such as vendor items and prices, trainer recipes, loot from sources you looted, and recipe details
It never records chat, mail contents, friends, guild data or other players' names. The addon on its own never sends anything to us.
If you write something in the addon's Feedback box and click Send, the addon saves your message on your computer, and the desktop app sends it to us after your next logout or /reload (see section 3). Without the app, nothing is sent; the box shows our email address instead.
2. The desktop app
Stored only on your PC
The app reads the addon's files and keeps the following on your computer:
- snapshots of your characters
- your plans
- your conversation history with the assistant
- your player profile: goals, play style and memories you've approved
This data is encrypted at rest with Windows' built-in protection, tied to your Windows user account. We never receive it except as described in section 3.
You can wipe all of it at any time with Settings → Forget me. Uninstalling the app also offers to delete it.
Sent when you ask the AI a question
When you ask the assistant something, the app sends:
- your question
- the part of your character data needed to answer it (for example, one character's gear)
- any profile entries that apply
- earlier messages in that conversation
It never sends:
- your Battle.net account, BattleTag or email
- player IDs
- chat or mail contents
- guild or realm rosters
- other players' names
Character names are sent by default so answers read naturally. Private mode replaces them with aliases such as "Alt 1" before anything leaves your PC.
3. What our servers handle
| Information | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|
| Account: email address, how you joined (the name we gave your invite code), sign-up and last sign-in dates, sign-in links and sessions, subscription status and plan, and for each PC where you connect the app: the PC's name (as Windows reports it), when it was connected and the day it was last used | To sign you in, run the invite-only alpha and apply your plan | Until you delete your account, plus up to 30 days in backups. Sign-in links expire after 30 minutes; sessions after 30 days or when you sign out. |
| Waitlist: email address and the date you joined it | To tell you when there's room in the alpha | Until you create an account, ask us to remove you, or we close the waitlist |
| Age check: sign-up asks the year you were born (and, for one borderline year, the month). We don't store your answer. If we can't create an account, we keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your email for 24 hours | To stop immediate retries with a different answer | 24 hours |
| Usage records: account ID, number of AI tokens used, model used, timestamps | To enforce free and paid quotas, prevent abuse and bill correctly | 12 months |
| AI requests and answers | Passed straight through to our AI provider to generate an answer | Not stored by us, except questions you choose to share and answers you choose to report (below). We don't log the content of questions or answers, including in error logs. |
| Buddy question labels: for each question, the subject (for example gear or professions), the part of Battle Buddy it's about, whether it's a question, request, complaint or praise, whether Buddy could answer, which kinds of game lookups (items, quests, NPCs and so on) found nothing, and any thumbs up or down you give. Not linked to your account, and no question text. | To see which subjects and features need work | 12 months |
| Shared questions, only if you turn on Share my questions in the app: the text of questions you type to Buddy (never its answers) and the names of game things Buddy looked up for them but found nothing on (items, quests, NPCs and so on), with links, email addresses, handles and long numbers removed. Not linked to your account. | To write an automatic weekly summary of what players ask for and which game data Battle Buddy is missing. The summary contains no quotes and no player or character names. | Deleted when that week's summary is written, about a week at most |
| Reported answers, only when you choose to send one: after you give an answer a thumbs down, the app asks whether to send that question and Buddy's answer. If you click Send, we get the question, the answer, which of Buddy's tools ran, and the reason you picked (if any), with links, email addresses, handles and long numbers removed. Character names in the text stay. Not linked to your account. | To find and fix wrong or unhelpful answers | 30 days |
| Community contributions (opt-in, see section 4) | To build the shared game catalog used by Battle Buddy and our other free addons, such as CraftPath | Raw submissions: deleted once their game facts are added to our catalog, and within 30 days of upload at the latest. Game facts: kept indefinitely. They contain no personal data. |
| Feedback you send from the addon's Feedback box | To fix problems and improve Battle Buddy | Up to 12 months. It contains what you typed and, if you leave the box ticked, technical details (addon versions, game build, the last error). It doesn't include your character's name or a contributor key; please don't type personal information into it. |
| Technical logs: IP address, request time, errors (without content) | Security, rate limiting and troubleshooting | 30 days |
4. Community contributions (opt-in)
The free app can share the game facts your addon observed, such as where NPCs stand, what trainers teach and for how much, what vendors sell, where herbs, ore and chests are, where dungeon entrances are, what creatures drop, and who gives quests, so the catalog stays accurate for everyone. The same accepted facts also keep our other free addons, such as CraftPath, up to date. This is off until you turn it on. The app shows you exactly what will be sent and what was last uploaded.
- Contributions contain game facts only. They don't include character names, realm names, player IDs, gold totals or anything else about you.
- Each installation uses a random contributor key created on your PC. It is not linked to your account. We store only a hashed (scrambled) version of the key, and only with the raw submission.
- To count how many different contributors reported each game fact, our catalog keeps a separate one-way code per fact. It can't be turned back into your contributor key, and the codes for different facts can't be linked to each other.
- During the alpha and beta, before World of Warcraft: Forever launches, we review contributions more often and by hand. A fact may be published once we've checked it ourselves, even if only one contributor has reported it so far.
- Once Forever launches, our standard validation applies: a fact is published only after several independent contributors report the same thing.
- You can pause contributing or delete your contributor key at any time in the app.
Contributor bonus. Contributors get extra free AI questions each week. We give the bonus without linking your contributions to your account:
- When a contribution batch is accepted, the app receives an anonymous weekly token. It's cryptographically "blinded", so it proves that someone contributed, but not who, and not what they contributed.
- The app redeems the token on your account at a random later time. We learn only that your account has a valid token. We can't tell which contributor key or which contributions it came from.
5. Payments
Purchases are handled by Paddle.com, our reseller and Merchant of Record. Paddle collects your payment details and billing information and handles tax. Its handling of your data is covered by Paddle's privacy policy.
We never see your full card number. Paddle shares limited information with us, such as your email, country, and subscription and transaction status, so we can provide what you bought.
6. Our website
battlebuddy.info doesn't use analytics or advertising trackers. If you sign in, we set one cookie that keeps you signed in. It's strictly necessary for your account page, lasts 30 days or until you sign out, and isn't used for anything else. We use no other cookies. If you start connecting the desktop app before signing in, the page also keeps the short connect code in your browser's storage for up to 15 minutes, so it can bring you back after the sign-in link. Our hosting provider records standard technical logs, such as IP address and pages requested, for security.
7. Service providers we use
| Provider | What they do | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Azure | Hosts our servers, website and data, and sends sign-in and account emails (Azure Communication Services) | United States |
| Anthropic | Generates AI answers. For questions about news and events, it can search a short list of World of Warcraft websites (Blizzard's own sites and a few community sites) on our behalf; the search is made by Anthropic, not from your PC, and uses only what the question needs. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic doesn't train its models on our requests. It deletes them within 30 days, except content its safety systems flag, which it may keep for up to 2 years. | United States |
| Paddle | Payments, tax and invoicing, as Merchant of Record | United Kingdom and United States |
We share information with these providers only so they can provide their service to us. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our users, the service, or others from harm or abuse.
8. What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't "share" it for targeted advertising.
- We don't show ads.
- We don't share your data with Blizzard Entertainment. Battle Buddy isn't affiliated with Blizzard.
- We don't let our AI provider train models on your data.
- We don't try to link your account to your Battle.net identity.
9. Your choices and rights
- Delete your local data: Settings → Forget me.
- Delete your account: on your account page at battlebuddy.info/account, in the app's account settings, or by emailing us. We then delete your account and usage records, except records we must keep for legal or tax reasons.
- Stop contributing: turn contributions off, or delete your contributor key, in the app.
- Get a copy of your data, correct it, or object to how we use it: email us. We'll reply within 30 days.
If you're in the EU, EEA or UK:
- You have rights under the GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection.
- You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
- Our legal bases are:
- performance of our contract with you (account, AI answers, subscription)
- legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, quotas)
- your consent (community contributions, which you can withdraw at any time)
- legal obligation (tax records)
If you're in California or another US state with a privacy law: you can ask to know, delete or correct your personal information, and we won't treat you differently for asking. We don't sell or share personal information as those laws define it.
10. International transfers
We're based in the United States and store data there. If you use Battle Buddy from outside the US, your information is transferred to the US. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as our providers' Standard Contractual Clauses.
11. Children
Battle Buddy accounts are for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
12. Security
We protect data with:
- encryption in transit (HTTPS)
- encryption at rest on your PC
- least-privilege access to our servers
- a policy of not storing conversation content at all
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
13. Changes to this policy
If we make significant changes, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date and tell you in the app or by email before the changes take effect.
